If you can solder, consider building your own cables and pedals. A good place for pedal kits is Build Your Own Clone, where you can purchase complete kits and instructions for copies of quite a few popular stompboxes. Check out this Rat Clone and this Big Muff Clone. If you’re feeling ambitious, re-house or repair your old pedals with parts from Pedal Parts Plus or Small Bear Electronics. Need cable parts? Try Redco. Here’s a soldering tutorial.

Several years ago I built a fuzz face clone (found the actual Dallas Arbiter schematic) and it sounds pretty cool. I blew out one of the PNP germanium transistors during prototyping, though, so I had to replace the post-gain one with a Radio Shack solid state, though it sounded pretty good that way. I still haven’t gotten around to painting the box to make it look pretty yet!
Building your own is certainly not cheaper than buying prefab pedals, though… but a fun hobby.

I received my Mighty Mouse pedal yesterday and built it within a few hours. It really is my new favorite pedal! I have several nice pedals including a Tube Screamer that I modded to the original spec. The Mighty Mouse just rocks. If your interested in building your own pedal, I’d recommend BYOC as one of several excellent places to go!
